...or do you need to pass a test, like you would with a car?

(Forgive me if that's a stupid question!)

Does this vary from country to country?

  1. In Canada you need a special boating license to operate motorized watercraft

  2. Your boat needs a certificate if it has a motor.  The person operating the boat doesn't need a license.   You can't drink and drive just like in a car.  If your around under 12 you are required to wear a life vest.  "Virginia resident"

  3. Many states (such as TX) require a Boater Education Class that teaches boating safety.  TX only requires it if you were born after a certain year.  It's a good idea to get the class weather it's required or not.  The laws in your area may be different so be sure and check on it.  Also there may be more than one agency that give their version of "Boater Education" so check to see if it is recognized by your state authority.  In Texas it would be Texas Parks and Wildlife, other states call it Fish and Game.  Check for your state operated website that will give you more specific information.

  4. In the US it varies by state, as was already mentioned. Your age may well have something to do with it. In NY if you are over 18 I believe, you do not need a certificate at all, but it is a good idea. Those who want to operate a PWC (jetski) need one regardless of age.

  5. No. If you are dead you can not operate a boat.

  6. It even varies from state to state, it is a good Idea to take a safe boating class anyway though, they are usually only 1 day (8hrs), contact the coast guard.
