Question:

Can anyone out there please answer a question about HUD for me? I promise to keep it simple! :)?

Hello!

I am a single, divorced mom. When I divorced I was awarded the property we lived on. Soon after my divorce, I became very ill with lupus and I could not afford even the small mortgage payment.

So I let my ex-hubby live there...in exchange for making the payments on the property. (The property is still mine, he signed a quit claim deed.)

I moved out into Section 8 housing (Kentucky.)

Anyway, my question is:

HUD is paying my rent on my apartment, which is almost $ 400. My mortgage payment was only $ 305 per month. Are there any programs out there that could help me make my mortgage payment, instead?

I only owe $ 13,500 on the property. Sadly, though...my credit isn't so great because I was disabled with lupus for three years before being awarded my disability.

Also, please know that I'm not some deadbeat just trying to bilk the government. I pray for a remission so that I can return to work.

I appreciate any advice! Thanks in advance!

  1. HUD does not pay  mortgages because it is not for profit, you profit from mortgage payments.

I am actually surprised you qualify for section 8 since you own property

  2. as far as i know they wont pay mortages , but will pay rent, dont make any sense but hey, its the goverment

  3. No.  You would have to be occupying the house to qualify for any assistance programs.  RIght now it's a rental and anyone who owns a rental is considered rich and not in need of housing assistance.

  4. No, they will not pay for mortgages only rent...the reason for this is because you would benefit cash wise if they paid your mortgage...ie, if you decided to sell the property and made a profit on it, they would have basically paid for you to make money...this is why HUD only pays for rent.  I believe that you must have misled your case worker as you do not qualify for rent payments if you own property.  I would be careful how you proceed from here because if they find out that you own property and you didn't report this initially they will force you to repay the rent that they have paid for you plus interest.  Additionally, they'll tack on penalties and could also suggest jail time if they feel that criminal fraud has been involved.

I suggest that you don't make any more waves as it would only take a simple property search to locate the property in your name.  Also, being disabled doesn't mean that they'll give you a free pass...you are receiving disability and they'll consider this your income...also if your husband is not paying child support they could go after him to force him to pay any money for rent that you received from HUD...

  5. You can go to the bank and ask for a loan modification.  Or you can hire an attorney to do this for you. There are also grants out there just for this.
