  1. Galations 5:14

    For all the law is fulfilled in one word,

    even in this;

    Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

    All the reading boils down to the core law.... love.

  2. One way of getting a relatively quick overview would be one of the larger one volume commentaries on the Bible, such as the Jerome. In addition to commentaries upon individual books of the Bible you will probably also find general articles relating to the background and history of the Bible

  3. The Catholic Church made the official Canon of Scripture. There is much more to understand and know about how this all came about.

    In 367 AD, Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria under Constantine the Great, set forth what proved to be the final canon of New Testament books in a letter listing 27 works. In 382 AD, at a synod held at Rome under Pope Damasus, church leaders influenced by Jerome adopted this list. The list was affirmed in councils at Hippo in 393 and 419 AD under Augustine and was officially ratified at a council in Rome around 473 AD. However, that council added no books that had not already been included in most earlier lists, and excluded no books that had not already been excluded by most lists.

  4. It was written by man, but breathed through the Holy Spirit. The Bible you see today is all about Jesus. When you can flip through its pages and see Jesus, you'll find joy like no other.  It can get really exciting.

  5. Here's one thing to note:

    When you read the 'old testament' you are not reading the Jewish scriptures. The OT is the Church edited, REorganised and alas often MIStranslated version of the Jewish Tanakh. The Tanakh is what Jews have always read and studied. It contains the Torah, Prophets and other Writings.

    If you'd like a good translation of the Tanakh, or the Torah, look out for the Stone edition of either :)
