I think he might be suffering from fin rot but i'm not sure. There's this black stuff at the end of his fins and and his gills a swelling up a tiny bit. I noticed when i asked a question about one of my other fish (by the way she's doing fine now) someone said to euthanize it, but how the h**l do you euthanize a fish!

  1. You have 2 major problems here.

    #1.

Never, never, never clean a fish tank with soap or any other cleaning agent. It is impossible to rinse it well enough to remove all of the residue, and it will kill your fish.

There is rarely any good reason to completely clean an aquarium, (weekly 25% water changes are recommended,) but if you must, bleach diluted 1-30 with water, vinegar, or plain old water are the only cleaners that should be used.

You should also never use a sponge. A paper towel is a good option, or you can use a special tank scrubber found at any pet/fish store.

A bowl is not conducive to a happy, healthy Betta.

For Bettas to live to their potential, they need proper care.

    1. A 5-gallon tank is minimal for Betta health. (10 gallons is better!) Smaller tanks and bowls do not maintain a consistent temperature, and it's nearly impossible to keep healthy water conditions.

    2. While a filter is not necessary for a betta if frequent water changes are done, it's a good idea in any tank in order to keep the water aerated and free of toxins.

    3. A heater is essential. Bettas need warm steady temperatures to thrive. Constant fluctuation leads to stress, which inevitably leads to disease and often death.

BTW, Bettas have been known to live for 10 years. I have personally known them to live for 6. These poor fish are abused by uneducated people who plop them in a small container, feed them, and then proclaim that they don't live more than a year or 2. Gee, I wonder why.

BTW, I'd guess fin-rot, but treating him will not help unless you drastically improve his living conditions.

  2. ok, what size tank is he in? what are your water parameters? ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte, how often do you do partial water changes? dont just euthanize him. answer these and i will update the answer x

  3. Soap in the bowl = bad idea.

Bowl = bad idea unless you change 60% or more of the water everyday.

It probably is finrot. I suggest you get a small tank, like a 5 gallon perhaps? Cmon, it $10 at the MOST.

  4. go to petco and get BETTA FISH REMEDY it is in a purple bottle and it cured my betta in no time
