Unlike the old days of whaling when the harpooneer would manually throw a spear into the whale, now the whale has no chance at all.

All the whales hunted in Japan are supposedly for scientific research.   They don't want to waste the whale after they kill it, so make it into food.   Japan has a huge supply of whale they can't get rid of since it isn't very popular any more, yet they continue to hunt them since its kinda a tradition.

When I was living in Japan last year, I found an end-cap at the grocery stocked with cans of whale meat.  This was not uncommon, however, but listed on the cans was a surprisingly large number for the population of the whales.  I later looked it up, and sure enough, it was way off.  I wanted to buy the can to take a picture of the label, but I didn't really want to eat it, and it is still whale meat.  It seems that even within Japan, there is a level of deception and denial.
