you no how in old movies, that the house wife would go to the neighbor house wife, and asked to borrow some sugar to make a pie, well the person who you quoted means that his life is like that borrowed sugar and every time, the neighbor house wife would never return the sugar. hope that helped. i guess you really have to view the quote as a story to understand the authors meaning.

It means that "your" life is only on loan to you and, although you are under no compulsion to return it at any specific time, it still belongs to another ( the Deity, perhaps? ).
