  1. You can't drive a a stick......and you're calling him g*y!?!

  2. So you're going to learn how to drive on Yahoo Answers and take his car anyways?

    You rock.

  3. attend a driving school.

  4. You need to practice as it's a totally different ball game from driving an automatic. I personally think that everyone should be required to learn on a standard.

Lesson one. Start by depressing the clutch and moving the shift lever to learn where each gear is. Once you have done that, put your right foot an the brake and your left foot on the clutch pedal. Start the car with the clutch pedal depressd all the way down. Hold it there and with your left hand, grip the wheel, with the right grab the shift lever and move it to neutral.

Once that is done and you are sure it's there ( move the shifter left to right and it will move freely) lift up on the cltch pedal slowly, you should feel it release about halfway to the top, some may be right at the top.

Depress the clutch again and move the lever to first gear, move your foot to the gas pedal and give it a bit of gas while gradually moving your foot off of the clutch. Once you start moving, give it more gas, your foot is off of the clutch.

Now you are moving, press the cltch in again and move to second gear using the same method except now you can just  keep your foot ready to do it again and it should become faster. This should all be done on a long stretch of road that is straight. Now you have to stop, this is done by, once again, stepping on the clutch and keeping it down, press on the brake, keeping your foot on the clutch. The car will come to a complete stop.

Do this over and over again. Eventually going through all the gears.  Do the same in reverse. Some shifters need to be pushed into reverse and in most cases it's shift pattern is etched on the top of the k**b.

The hardest thing, is the last thing, learning how to start off on a hill.....it's not easy either. When you get to the top of the hill, you do the brake and the clutch together, you find the spot the the clutch holds the car there and doesn't quite engage, you need to give it a little more gas than you did before, your foot is now off the brake and the clutch is holding the car from moving in any direction....AGAIN, this is difficult but very do able you need to gain confidence in your control. Once you have held the car in place with the clutch and gas, you need to lift off the clutch while giving it enough gas to move forward. This is done in first gear which is always the starting point. Now, you just continue driving going through the gears as you did before. Down shifting is the next thing to learn, let's say you are going fifty MPH and you see a traffic light, you use the transmission to slow you down by going down one shift at a time, then applying the brakes, this saves the brakes and give you more control.

My suggestion would be to have someone that owns a standard to show you all of this. As I said, it takes practice.

    Good luck, Rick

  5. This guy does a VERY good job explaining how to drive standard, definitely worth watching:

  6. First press the clutch pedal to the floor and shift the gear to 1st gear, let out the clutch until the car start to move  (very slight) then add a little gas to speed up as you continue to release the clutch pedal. It would be better if you have someone show you how to drive and shift it first before you try.

    God Bless

  7. Driving a standard takes more than you think. *cordination *

Timing and knowing when to gear up or down. Knowing how to pull out  and change the gear without grinding it. or being a green horn. Knowing the amout of pressure on the gas pedal.

and when and how to let the clutch out right.  and knowing you are in control of 3 pedals not 2.  It does take practice but it can be done. Knowing how to pull out on a hill takes practice too. Practice changing gears get used to it in sitting position. how they glide into each gear. But make sure the emergency brake is set.  Learn where there is no traffic getting used to the clutch. Some are really fast clutches. It takes time and patience to learn. But from the way you talked I don't know that anyone is willing to teach you. There is no space for oops i forgot to depress the clutch in when trying to gear down or stopping.

  8. I dont know anyone that would let you take their manual car if you had no idea how to drive it. Its not somthing you can just read and do. Somone needs to show you while your behind the wheel and it takes practice to be decent enough at it to start driving other peoples cars.
