I am planning a boating holiday with some friends and want to plan stop offs for drinks and food - a list, or map, detailing all the pubs along the leeds-liverpool canal, including reviews, would be fantastic!

  1. try Yell.com

  2. Veronica is absolutely correct, a Nicholsons is a must for any canal trip.

She also gives some good tips regarding moorings etc. What i would advise is mooring away from the town centres, unfortunately some yobs think it`s fun to harrass boaters and if possible choose a mooring where there are others moored, you will probably end up having a barbie and a few drinks with them.

Some friends of ours had their home mooring at the top of the Wigan flight and the lady had hurt her wrist during their cruise. They contacted British Waterways who sent someone to assist with the locks, so if you need them BW are only a phone call away.

Have a good cruise and be prepared to consider buying your own boat after you return.

  3. If you go canal boating anywhere, anytime, it is a good idea to be equipped with a map of the particular canal system you are intending to visit.

Nicholson's is probably the most used - find it in W. H. Smiths, Marina shops and chandleries, and at the Boat & Caravan Show later this month at the Birmingham Exhibition Centre, from the IWA book stall.

Nicholson's maps are  detailed Ordnance Survey "road" maps giving you all information about watering holes for people and boats, markers to show your mileage (so you can calculate by counting little dots just how far to the next pub - 3 dots = approx 1 hour)  information about it, where you can fill up with water, fuel, etc.  Where the locks are, shopping accessibility from the canal and moorings.

I always travel with the appropriate copy, even on waterway trips which we do every year (to the Crick Boat Show for example) especially as I have a good many added notes like good mooring places we've used in previous years.

If you are looking for your next night's mooring, keep an eye on railway lines (shown on the Nicholsons map) since you don't want to moor up in an idyllic looking spot and find the Sir Richard Branson is driving one his trains about six feet from your pillow!  And don't moor right under a busy road bridge or within earshot of a busy motorway (all this is shown on your map)

P.S. Anyone coming to this year's National at Wolverhampton?!
