Can anyone point me to some information about the negative environmental effects of landfills?

I need reliable sources. Any negative effects. Gases, leachate, how it affects our daily lives, etc.

Our immediate daily lives? That is the point to a landfill, they make our problems "go away", and that is the number one problem with them.  The second most defining problem is the "future syndrome", that is all these toxic land pimples will have to be dealt with by future generations. In the US, when it comes to gases our problem is we just simply vent them into the atmosphere, not capturing them for the potential energy use. Leachate is becoming so toxic that we are having to reduce environmental standards so it can inter waterways and contaminate groundwater supplies. This is because of the increasing use of computer electronics, especially batteries in laptops and cell phones that people just don't seem to give a second thought to and "throw away".
