I'm having trouble understanding something. After ovulation how long does the egg fertile? If it does become fertilized how long does it take? I've read "Taking charge of your fertility" but I'm still a bit confused. Thanks!!!

  2. The term "conception" is not usually used in scientific literature because of its variable definition and connotation. However the term conception commonly refers to fertilisation, and also implies implantation or even "the point at which human life begins",

Human fertilization is the union of a human egg and sperm, It is also the initiation of prenatal development.

A single sperm penetrates the cell membrane of the egg or oocyte. The sperm fuses with the oocyte, enabling fusion of their genetic material which gives your baby the ideal characteristics fo its parents.

The egg usually remains fertile for more than 12 hours, while the sperm may remain viable upto 72 hrs.

More details can be had from wikipedia under "human fertilisation."

All the very best, but dont think of it as baby production.

Just lay back and enjoy the gift of God.

  3. babycenter.com

The egg is usually "alive" for 24-48 hours. Conception will take place then the fertilized egg will travel down the fallopian tube into the uterus then attach to the wall of the uterus. The nice thing is is that sperm can survive up to 72 hours. So even if you don't have s*x within the 24-48 hours, you could still have sperm waiting to fertilize and egg from before the egg is released.

    good luck

  6. Go to google type in conception. Hope it helps ya.

  7. Once the egg is released, it will be fertilized usually during the next 12-24 hours (because that's as long as it lives) if it will be fertilized at all.  Since you don't know exactly when the egg is released or how long it will live, the day of ovulation is your most fertile time, with a possibility of still be fertile the day after (assuming the egg is still alive).  I'm sure if you google "conception" you'll be able to find something.  I don't know a site specifically for conception, but Essential Conception Guide is a great site if you're trying to get pregnant, as is Fertility Friend.

Best of luck and lots of baby dust!

  8. Your egg only lives to be fertilized for 12 hrs or so.  The reason they say you can get pregnant a few days out of the month is b/c the sperm can live inside you for 1-3 days.  Basically, you want the sperm waiting for the egg to drop.  I think it becomes fertilized in the f tubes and then once fertilized it implants in the uterus. Once implantation occurs you are considered preggers.  It can take up to 12 days for the egg to implant which is why you have to wait around 2 weeks after you ovulate to test.  I hope this helps and baby dust you.
