I know I've left it a bit late but I'm thinking of going to Cornwall in August. Can anyone recommend where is best to stay ? Should we go right down to St Ives area or stay a bit further up eg Bodmoor. I will be taking a 6 yr old so there needs to be a Beach fairly nearby and plenty of things to do.

I would also be grateful for day trip recommendations and also recommendations/suggestions re accommodation.

Many Thanks

Thanks

  1. cornwall is great! Yeah i think you should go to st ives, or down near lands end-there is a lot to do at lands end, and st ives has a fantastic beach! you should google it tho, you will find out what there is to do there.

we are going camping there in august!!

  2. Newquay!

Holywell bay is amazing, so long as you have a car there is loads to do there.

Its good because they have a themepark and kids club for kids but the beach is beautiful so you can have a good time too.

You could stay in a caravan if you want to do it a little more cheaply .

Park dean have a nice site there right next to the beach.

  3. well, i would have said St Ives would be perfect, but also check out;

    Newquay,

    Perranporth,

    Polperro,

    Looe,

  4. Crowded though it gets, I'd probably overall recommend the Newquay area, unless peace and quiet is a real priority.

(edit: for peace and quiet, and character, I'd agree with 'er indoors, below, and Polruan, but that's not a quick place to get away from for day trips by car, the beaches are much more restricted on the south coast, and some are shingle rather than sand: search for beaches on the extra URL)

A good hour off your journey time each way compared to the west tip of Cornwall, lots of attractions (zoo, aquarium, theme parks), and lots of beaches.

The Crantock side is quieter and Crantock beach and the Gannel is a superb for digging and building dams and waterways.   No facilities beyond toilets at the car park, so plan a *comprehensive* picnic and watch for the high and low tide times.  Some Cornish beaches vanish completely at low tide.

From the Newquay region Land's End (tourist trap, but it is Land's End) is an hour-ish, and everything else west a bit less, subject to August traffic, and possible jams.

Steam railway at Lappa valley Newquay with other activities..?

  5. I really like St Ives. It's a lovely place. In Helston there's Goonhilly satallite earth station that can be quite fun, there's also Flambards (it's a theme/adventure park) that he/she will love as there's plenty to do and there's a little educational bit inside, also near Helston there's the National Seal Sanctuary, which is lovely as it looks after rescued seals and you get to feed the seals, which is great fun for children and adults, only problem is it's a lengthy journey. In St. Ives there's a Barbara Hepworth museum and sculpture garden and a tate gallery, although I'm not sure if these will appeal to your 6 year old. There's also a 'Kidz R Us' theatre and paradise park in St. Ives which might be more suitable. I've given you some links that I think may be some use to you. Where ever you decide to go Cornwall is a lovely place. I hope this helps you a little bit, have a lovely holiday :)

  6. I live in the S.E of Cornwall, which has the prettiest countryside, but the best beaches are found further down the coast. I would reccommend Looe, for kids, as it's lively, but not rough, like Newquay, (Blackpool of the South) and not as crowded as the more popular resorts, where everybody else is heading. There are some smashing attractions nearby, and some gorgeous secluded coves to discover.

I also reccommend Polruan, which has a truly wonderful little campsite, located at the top of the village, with breathtaking views over the bay. The little one will love the boat trips over to Fowey, the lovely little town a short ferry ride across the estuary. Polruan has 2 small beaches, 2 pubs, and not a lot more, but it's a lovely little fishing village, that isn't bombarded by tourists, and offers a more traditional family holiday.

I look after a small cottage, that sleeps 4, in Polruan, and I will try and get details up for you.

You really don't have to waste petrol by travelling right down the Cornish coast, when places like Looe, and Polruan are not far over the Cornish border. Highly reccommended for both peace and quiet, and a bit of life too if you wish!!

  7. Go to Perranporth, an amazing beach, and is close enough to Newquay if you want it lively.

  8. Sure   if you can stand the traffic!! St Ives area is lovely - Bodmin is ages out and takes a long time to drive anywhere to be honest!

  9. We're going to Dawlish Warren in Devon, nr Torquay, we're staying in Welcome family holiday park, which we booked through hoseasons, beach is about a 10 min walk and there is plenty to do and see, I would def recommend this as a holiday and its not as far as Cornwall, this will be the third time we're going now.

  10. omg im going in august ive been like 3 times and perrenporth is the best place ever.  everything is so close by and it has a beach so close you walk out your hotel or camp site and your there lol.  try camping its really cheap and really good fun for kids
