  1. Most introductory textbooks are simple and have lots of diagrams and pictures. They may be a bit too complicated for a 10 year old to fully understand but maybe these books would help kindle his interest.

The majority of geologists I know have strong spatial skills and enjoy geology partially because of the 3 dimensional nature of many problems. You could purchace blocks, Legos, et cetera.

Most importantly of all, encourage your son to play outside.

  2. I can't think of any books off the top of my head, have a look on the british geological survey websites and the geological association website too. BGS has a place in Edinburgh http://www.bgs.ac.uk/contacts/sites/edin...

but I have a better idea than books.

Take the lad on some field trips.

There are several geological groups in Scotland who, I am certain, will run trips. Check out  which ones will be suitable for a younger person.

I know that someone runs commercial trips in the Edinburgh region too. Tourist information might be able to help, that is how I found out about th etrips on my holiday visit. (the cost was only a couple of pounds)

If you are feeling brave, ther are a quite a few field gides, the G.A. do a series and there are a couple of books covering the edinburgh Region, and Glasgow regions as well, probably more. You could then go with your son on a self-guided field trip at your own pace.

I have not been, but the "Dynamic Earth" centre next to the Scottish Parliament looks like it would be fun for a ten year old too.

BGS online bookshop  http://shop.bgs.ac.uk/Bookshop/ - look in the "education and Leisure" and the "geological guides" sections

Geosupplies, Private business, I can recommend the service http://www.geosupplies.co.uk/books-maps....

Don't forget "Rockwatch" the junior geologist organisation#

  3. Ask him to read the book by name earthquakes author Mr. Bruce A Bolt. You will get this book from Amazon .com at a very cheaper rate. Because I studied the book in USA library in the year 2002 I was able to issue the warning 2 hours before Tsunami struck our coast in the year 2004.But it was not relayed by the local T.V.Stations people. The instrument sensed that day earthquake for an unusual time of 12 minutes was designed by me in the year 2001 itself. But it was certified by our meteorological department as useless.

  4. Bill Bryson's " A Brief History of Everything" is a really good read for anyone interested in the sciences. The language is very straight forward, and depending on your son's reading level, may be comprehensible for him, especially if you read it with him. It includes a really nice couple of chapters on Geology.

  5. Observers books ,  if they still exist .
