I need to get catastrophic coverage and don't know too much about it. Any recommendations are appreciated.

  1. All health insurance companies offer high deductible health plans in conjunction with Health Savings Accounts.

If you are healthy using an HSA is a great tax advantaged way to develop a "self insured" fund that can be used to pay for that high deductible and other routine medical costs.

  2. Self insured isn't catastrophic.  Catastrophic is basically a regular health insurance plan, with a really high deductible - like $5,000 or $10,000.

Your local agent is the best place to go for something like this.  It IS medically underwritten, you'll have an application to fill out, etc.

  3. Depending on your age and what state you live in, I have found that Aetna offers good health insurance coverage at an affordable price for 20-30 somethings.  Above that United Healthcare and American Community offer reasonable rates for high deductible health plans.

An HSA is a viable alternative to a traditional plan as previously mentioned.

  4. Actually catastrophic plans are either limited benefit plans OR by definition they technically tack on additional benefit to an existing plan.

Getting a "regular" major medical plan or an HSA with a higher deductible as was mentioned is a better route to travel.
