  1. I ordered this one:

    http://www.fastax-ea-exam.com/product.ht...

and took a class offered by H&R Block and I passed all parts (4 at the time) on the first try with plently of room to spare.

Many people in my class ordered the Gleim books and they really liked them.

  2. I like the H&R Block course, but I'm a little prejudiced, since I work there. I have friends who have ordered the Fastax course as well, and I see the link has already been posted.

I am not yet an EA. I hate failing, am not used to it, and am avoiding the exam. But the boss-man is really encouraging, so this might just be the year... or not

    Blessings!

  3. I was kind of watching your question to see how people would answer it.  I am kind of surprised that nobody has - with all these "experts" answering questions, I would hope that at least some are EAs and would like to see others become EAs as well.

I am taking the tests right now myself.  I took and passed Part I without doing anything - didn't pick up a book or even look at the list of topics that Prometric shows you on their web site.  I just took it right after the season ended to see if I had learned enough in my six seasons of doing taxes to make me pass, and I did.  If I had to do it again, I would definitely at least look at the list of topics and study up on things I have not had a lot of experience with.

I am scheduled to take Part II this Wednesday and I am studying for that one, since I don't have as much experience with corporations and partnerships to draw on.  I am using the list of topics from Prometric and looking them up in the Small Business Quickfinder that I use as reference during tax season.  If I pass that, I will sign up for Part III, get the topic list from Prometric and look those topics up in whatever references I can.  If I don't pass Part II, I may break down and buy one of those self study classes I have found.

I have listed links to them below.  The last links are not self-study, but links to various ways of preparing provided by the National Assoc of Tax Professionals.  I have heard good things about the Wise guides but I will probably go for the Phoenix one myself (if I do buy anything) just for the low price - about $100 and it covers all three parts.
