Can anyone recommend a mosquito repellent for cats?

I am tending a neighborhood stray who had been injured in a fight. His biggest problem at the moment seems to be that the insects won't leave him alone. Everything I've seen at the pet store is for dogs only.

I am open to natural recipes too, if anyone knows how to make them, but would prefer to have something I could put on the poor thing today. He's scratching up a storm, and biting the fur off his tail. I've looked for fleas and haven't found any, just some old scabs he keeps scratching open.

Bringing the cat indoors is not an option, unfortunately.

  1. WELL HE NEEDS A BATH!!  USE FLEA SHAMPOO AND MAKE IT QUICK SINCE HE IS STILL HEALING.  IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE FLEAS... IT CAN BE CHIGGERS OR EVEN SCABIES WHICH ARE INVISABLE TO THE EYE.... EVEN MANGE.... IF MOSQUITOES ARE THE PROBLEM... BURN A CANDLE IN HIS MAIN SITTING ROOM CONTAINING DEET... BUT IF IT IS SOMETHING NAKED TO THE EYE.... U FIRST MUST FIND OUT WHAT EXACTLY IT IS SO YOU CAN SELECT THE PROPER MEDICATION FOR IT.

  2. Hey Helene! What's up?!?!?! OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG I love cats!

  3. Deep Woods Off. Be sure it is Deep Woods Off (the pump is best). Spray in your hands & gently fluff around his fur. Do not spray directly or on open wounds or try to drown the cat. A little will go a long way, remember he is a small animal. I have a friend who has a cat & has kidney problems & a small liver. The cat can not use the (heart guard or sentinel pills) or the flea & tick drops between his shoulders or a flea collar because the skin absorbs it into the organs, damaging them. The skin does not absorb the Deep Woods Off, therefore keeping fleas & ticks away. Also, you mentioned you can not bring the cat inside so at nite before you put him out, use a little yard guard fogger (20-30 ft. or more) around his sleeping area & wait til it clears comepletely before bringing him out. This plan was recommended by her Vet & has been very effective & relief for her inside cat & barnyard cats for the last couple of years now. We have recommended this to others with success stories. Check with your vet. Hope this helps.

  4. A few drops of Tea Tree oil onto the cat's coat or you can get Tea Tree Skin calm from the pet shop. Tea Tree is a natural repellent and wont harm the cat in any way.

  5. Try a cedar oil spray. I get it at PetSmart & use it on the dogs, cats & kids - it may seem a bit pricey but one bottle lasts for awhile. There may be another source for it among herbal shops, natural food stores, etc. One tip for anyone using it for fleas - it's a REPELLANT and works best if used before you see any fleas. If you've already got fleas, the same company makes a shampoo.

  6. To protect your cat, look for products that contain pyrethrin, such as bioSpot Flea & Tick Spray. bioSpot SPOT ON® is also a safe repellent for cats. NOTE: Permethrins are NOT safe for cats.

Not ideal, but better than nothing.
