Anyone knows of a nice place/hotel to stay in Saigon? Id prefer a safe district - I read somewhere that there is a backpacker's street - is this area safe? My budget is strictly backpacker's but maybe someone can recommend a place where rooms are comfy enough with clean toilet, airconditioning. I recently also travelled to Jakarta, Bangkok & KL and found myself a cheap but nice room - with AC, clean toilet, even free breakfast - in each of these countries. I was hoping I could find the same in Saigon. I'd appreciate details. Thanks.

  1. Sorry we always stay with my wife Uncle when in SaiGon.  Cheers C

  2. The backpacker area is off of Pham Ngu Lao and is safe as is most places in Saigon.  I am not too keen on it as a place to take a room because it's packed with too many unkempt visitors, sidewalks are crowded with Vietnamese selling stuff, open tour buses loading and unloading passengers and all sorts of chaos.  Though it's a good place to visit, have a cheap but good meal and a few drinks and people watch but then leave.

Where I am staying now is pretty good, I write about it on my blog  http://dougsasia.blogspot.com/ "In Saigon - my new place"  Think a daily rate is around $15.00 (us).  Also in my links you'll see one for the Victory guest house, used it for a couple years before this one.  Good and  also in the same price range.  Both place are close to Pham Ngu Lao and close to central places in dist,1 like Ben Thanh Market.

  3. The Hilton in a bargain. free room and board. Senator McCain stayed there for a few years as a guest of the Vietnamese government.

  4. yeah, backpacker's street's safe. I think there has a clean place with reasonable price for you.
