Can anyone recommend a non-toxic plastic coating for arts & crafts? ?

I am making ABC blocks for my toddler. I'd like to complete the craft by coating each block with a non-toxic plastic coating both to preserve the craft beneath and (above all) create a safe barrier between baby and block... which will inevitably end up in my baby's mouth. For the record, all materials used in this craft are non-toxic as well. Any recommendations? I stumbled upon a product called Plastic Varnish by Rose Brand. Does anyone have experience using this product?

  1. I looked for more information on the product and couldn't find any... you may have to go shopping and ask someone at the local crafts store if they know, or read the label in person. I would worry that despite being non-toxic the sealants might have warnings to keep them away from dishes, toys, etc.

I also found a product called Liquid Laminate that claims to be non-toxic, but could not find further information other than it is a clear plastic-like coating.

I would advise searching your local craft store. If all else fails, have you considered simply oiling the wood well? There are many seed oils available which will work as rudimentary sealants and bonding agents when rubbed into wood. I know Linseed oil is great as a weatherproofer but I am not sure of its toxicity rating.

  2. How about good ol' shellac?  Once the alcohol that dissolves it evaporates, it's pretty inert and a generally recognized toddler-safe wood finish.  Easy to work with, easy to repair if it gets banged up.  Wipe, brush or spray.  Repair by rubbing with an alcohol soaked cloth and allowing to dry.
