  1. I would agree with Likeitor_ about Polidar. Another "studentish", non-pricey restaurant worth trying is "Chartier"! Everyone sits together at long tables and the waiters write & compute your "addition" (check) on the paper tablecloths. LOADS of atmosphere, history & regulars and a great place to talk to others due to the seating arrangements. (I met a very wonderful boyfriend here!) Oh! The food's great too!

One more option is the food vendors. Doners/gyros to go on Rue de la Huchette near Saint-Michel are a steal as are many crepe stands. (I paid about 2 euro fifty for a crepe holding probably 1/2 pound of feta cheese!) There's a great one at the intersection of Rue LaFayette and Rue de Faubourg Montmartre (about a block from Chartier!), but of course they're all over the city.

Also a fine baguette, a round of camembert and a bottle of reasonable red wine make a FINE picnic and are some of the best bargains in Paris! For a fancier picnic, check out the food halls under Galeries La Fayette--you can buy yourself a fine little repast with everything from Champagne to Pâté de Foie Gras to Lobster Themidor to chocolate dipped strawberries and more and more and more. (Even if you don't want/can't afford to buy there, it's worth a look/see!)

Have a great time! Je suis jalouse (& maintenant j'ai faim!!)!

  2. It's difficult to eat in an actual bistro or restaurant that's cheap and good in Paris. There are lots of fast take out food joints up and down the Rue St. Antoine. However, if you are looking for a reasonably priced sit down restaurant, one of my favorites is Vins des Pyrénées in the Marais neighborhood close to Bastille. It's charming inside, the food is excellent, the prices are reasonable and the wait staff is friendly. Not a lot of English spoken but they do speak Spanish. Their meat dishes were heavenly, I've eaten there a bunch of times, it's my old stand by for a solid meal.

Here's a description from ParisMarais website:

What used to be a wine merchant is now a charming, romantic traditional French bistrot with antique post card memorabilia adorning the walls and an old-world charm. The cuisine is one step up from the usual offering; the menu changes frequently, but you might find such creations as: Salade d'artichauts à l'oeuf poché et crème de lard, Poêlée de champignons et escargots, Fricassée d'encornets au pistou, risotto crémeux à l’encre de seiche, Saumon de Norvège rôti à l'anis étoilé, and Souris d'agneau braisée aux choux verts. Be sure to take a souvenir "carte de visite" – it's a recreation of a World War I post card picturing two lovers and the notation: "Lorsque de tes deux bras, tu entoures mon cou, je me rappelle notre premier jour au Vins des Pyrénées, le petit bistrot où tu me souris pour la première fois ..."
