Question:

Can anyone recommend a restaurant in London within a couple of tube stops from Bank or Monument?

We are staying in a hotel in the City for my birthday this weekend and I am having great trouble choosing somewhere to go for dinner on Saturday night! I'm not fussed about the type of food - would just like somwhere nice and not too expensive! About £30 per head not including wine.

Hope someone can help - thanks!

  1. This is quite a difficult one - restaurants in that specific area of London can be expensive, as during the week all the financial people go out for business lunches etc. on work accounts!

Le Coq Argent right near Bank is meant to be really good with some excellent views of London but it is a little over your price range.

Try looking on www.toptable.co.uk which gives good reviews and a price guide.

I suggest you move slightly out of the area - places like Shoreditch, Brick Lane etc is only really a ten to fifteen minute(I used to walk it myself!) almost straight walk from that part of the City and wil be much better for drinks, entertainment etc.  I highly recommend having a walk, you will see and discover so much more of London.  And you'll soon find out that London isn't big and scary but quite close together.

Other than that - there will be quite a few pubs and bars around that will do food.  Perhaps you could pop in one of those.  Warning - The City is very dead at the weekends as no-one is at work!

Hop you have a good time!

  2. 'm right 98% of the time. Who cares about the other 3%?

  3. There are a couple of good places near Chancery Lane that come to mind (two stops from Bank)

    The White Swan

    The Chancery

  4. You could try looking at a couple of websites, one is the Square Meal one, the other is Top Table (do a google search and they'll come up).  You can search by area/region and see reviews from people who've eaten there.  Good luck and have a great weekend.

  5. There are two good, reasonable restaurants in New Oxford Street which is near Holborn or Tottenham Court Road station.

The Italian Kitchen does excellent food and has a range of good wines. Check it out on

    www.toptable.co.uk

You can book on line and when we did that last time, we got a glass of wine each free!

Savoir Faire just opposite at 42 New Oxford serves good french food in a relaxed and interesting atmosphere.

An interesting place to go would be Papageno's in Wellington Street, behind the transport museum in Covent Garden. We have not eaten there YET, but went in for a drink and were blown away by the decor. I had a cafetiere of coffee which was delicious, my husband a bottle of beer. We served with a smile and given a basket of bread, dip, olives and peppers. This cost £5. The food menu was varied and very reasonably priced. Put this restaurant into an internet search. If you don't eat there, check it out for a drink.

It would be a good idea to book in advance, especially at weekends.

Enjoy your visit, congratulations on choosing London.
