I have plantar fachitis and heel spurs and I will be hiking up to 10 miles in rugged Alaskan terrain. I need a boot that has support for my foot problems, cushion in the heel and is warm. Thanks!!

  1. Cougar boots are really warm if you get ones that are waterproof and designed for cold climate.  they are sometimes comfortable but can be a bit hard inside so its best to get an insole that adds cushioning, like memory foam, and get the boots big enough to fit the insoles comfortably without your instep feeling squished

  2. Lowa's or Asolo's.  You need actual hiking specific boots for rugged  terrain.  Each company makes several models, but in Alaska you need  Goretex models for the waterproofing.  Rugged terrain in Alaska means either climbing, rocky trails or both.  You might need sole inserts as well for your plantar problems.  Go to a reputable hiking store and get fitted.  That means a real backpacking store, not someplace that sells basketball or baseball stuff as well.  Take a worn pair of shoes or boots with you.  Most hiking shops have people specially trained in how to properly fit boots.  Fit is everything, especially with foot problems.

The warmth will come with real hiking socks, such as Thorlo or Smartwool.  These hiking specific socks come in different thicknesses to keep you warmer or cooler.  One of the biggest mistakes folks make is spending a lot of money on proper boots, then wearing cotton socks purchased in a ten pack.

Be sure to break them in by wearing them around for a couple of weeks before your trip.  You can adjust lacing and such, really dialing them in before your trip.  And have fun - sounds like you are in for a great trip.  Don't forget the rain gear and mosquito repellent - Alaska summers can be a bit boggy.

  3. merrell boots.

my mother has huge bunions and foot problems and she has never had a more comfortable boot. i swear by them as well. i have very flat feet and they fit me perfectly right off the shelf. they are reasonably priced and are very durable and look good as well.
