Im a college student and im getting kinda a small room this semester so im thinking about investing in a futon.

Has anyone had any experiences with those? Would I be able to sleep on it comfortably every night? Any good brands or places to get them from?

  1. I love futons. Some people think they're hard, but I hate the way regular mattresses dip and rise as you move around on them. Even the firm ones sag in spots eventually.

You can get futons with or without a spongy core. The original futons didn't have this, of course, but it you prefer a regular mattress, the spongy core feels more like that.

Thicker is better, but heavier. It should feel reasonably soft to the touch. If you get one with a coarse surface, you'll feel that roughness right through your sheets - crappy material usually goes along with cheap workmanship.

Really, I don't know of any famous brand names for futons.

A store that specializes in futons is your best bet. If there's a store on campus, that's probably your best bet, because they sell futons regularly. Next is a store with an easy return policy, like IKEA, in case you don't like it. IKEA at least tries to make their stuff decent and durable. Wal-mart also carries some, but I don't know what the quality is like. Some mattress stores have them, but since they really sell regular mattresses, the quality may be good or bad. So shop around a bit before you choose.

  2. NO, they are very uncomfortable. I would go with a day bed with a lot of soft pillows or check into some of the new fold out couches they flip in and out and don't have bars in them that poke into your back.
