I'm going to my daughters school to do story time with the P1s and want some good storys to take with me, ones where i can get the kids involved with props and or repetition and ones that are suitable for both boys and girls, any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

  1. Chicken Licken is great for repetition, plus the rhyming and/or alliterating names are usually a hit with little ones. Other good ones for repetition that often go down well are The Magic Porridge Pot, Farmer Duck, Rumpelstiltskin. A good one for props if you want to get them involved in acting it out might be Little Red Riding Hood. But also remember that story time for the tinies is like "wind down" time so that they can effectively get the 5 & 6 year old equivallent of an afternoon nap! You (and they) may be glad of something where they don't have to join in too much. Good luck.

  2. My daughter's favorite book in kindergarten was the Jim Aylesworth version of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears."  The illustrations are gorgeous, and the kids will be familiar enough with the story to join in on the "too hard, too soft, just right" thing.

    More favorites:

    "Horton Hatches the Egg"

"Tikki Tikki Tembo" (plenty of repetition here!)

"Two Bad Mice" (not much repetition, but a cute story!)

  3. Roald Dahl - His stories are very good.  Children love the exaggeration especially in George's Marvellous Medicine.

Most Children may have seen film versions of some of his books which can also help.

Revolting Rhymes is excellent as children think it is funny when things are out of context to the story they have been told.  I think it makes them feel more grown up.

  4. The Gruffalo!  If you are good at putting on scary voices or can roar, the kids will love it. I have used this one at my sons school many times.

  5. The Hungry Catterpillar, The Enormus Turnip, The Elephant and the Bad Baby. All Classics

  6. When you give a mouse a cookie

When you take a mouse to school

    Green Eggs & Ham

  7. Where the Sidewalk ends is a great kids book and for 5-6yr olds dr. seuss is always a great choice!! or you could go with pokie little puppy or bearinstein bears, they were my favorite when I was little..lots of pictures and good lessons!

  8. My daughter is 6 but last year her favorite book to be read to her at school was I Stink! by Kate McMullen. I thought what a title but it was a cute little story lol. I bought it for her from Amazon. com.

  9. when you give a mouse a cookie

    hungry catipillar

    how do dinosaurs get better

    dear mrs. la rue

    rugrats(might be too old)

  10. Going on a bear hunt is my kids favourite story.

Other than that hungry caterpillar and the gruffalo

  11. Do you care if they get a bit loud?

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems is a laugh riot. The Pigeon keeps asking the reader if he can drive--so the kids can be answering him.

This is fun but not a "repeat back to me" story: Click, Clack, Moo, Cows that Type by Doreen Cronin. Funny and Clever

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly by Simms Taback

    http://www.amazon.com/There-Lady-Swallow...

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat (also by Taback)

There are many variations on Tolystoy's story about a giant turnip. I like one by Pierr Morgan but it may be out of print. The story line is that the turniup gets so big the farmer can't pull it out so he gets his wife who gets someone else etc. as each character is added the list is repeated. The names are fund and the kids can chant along with you.

From Head to Toe by Eric Carle is fun and interactive. He shows animals doing things and then asks if the reaeder can do them (stomp, wiggle, etc)

Mr Brown Can Moo Can You? by Dr Seuss is a book about sound and noises and the reader is asked to moo, pop, and make other fun sounds.

Soem fun books to read that they won't be able to repeat back or anything, but they will laugh and have fun:

No, David! By David Shannon is about a boy who gives people lots of reasons to say NO. ROFL

    http://www.amazon.com/No-David-Shannon/d...

The Dragon books by Dav Pilkey will crack them up. We have a copy with several of the Dragon stories in it that my first grader has been reading to his class. They liked the stories about Dragon at his house best. (Dragon sweeps his floor and sweeps and sweeps trying to get all the dirt up---then the mailmouse reminds him he has a dirt floor.LOL) I think that is is "Dragon Gets by"

I think those books are a good place to start--have fun!
