  1. unfortunately, most of rome seems to have been set up for tourists.  they can sell cheap appalling food to the tourists for grossly inflated prices.

the lonely planet recommended that you steer clear of restaurants that

    a)  have the menu in various languages

    b) have their staff out the front soliciting for customers

that advice was helpful when i was there, about a month ago.

try the trastavere district - it's much quieter and less 'touristy'.

try a ristorante if you want more than pizza or pasta.

  2. - Giggetto al portico d'Ottavia.

    - Checchino dal 1887.

    - Sora Lella.

    - Birreria Trilussa.

    - Meo Patacca.

  3. Rome, unfortunately, is an expensive city.  What I can recommend is not to go to restaurant which is near the Vatican. Speaking from personal experience, there even a simple burger from a kiosk would cost you a 'fortune'.

  4. go to via vinito , it is a street with many restaurants and cafes and good prices , it is not far from fontana treve

  5. Most of he rest. in rome are good and not expensive,

in the center I suggest "polese" on via cavour, da francesco near piazza navona,  and if you go to trastevere i full of good restaurants.

There price for a meal in italy goes from 30 to 45 euro a person including wine, and the service is included, is not like in usa where you have to live 15% tip, usually a cuople of euro on the table are just fine..

  6. The above answers are great - stay out of the touristy areas and the multi-language menus are a dead giveaway.

We now rent an apartment when we visit Rome.  We have our big meal when we are out site seeing. Lunch in Rome, like here is less expensive. On our return to the apartment we stop at all the local shops and feast on anti-pasti and wine for dinner.  It's authenic, cheap and delicious.

  7. If you want to enjoy a good glass of red wine and real authentic roman dishes, go to the TRATTORIA... We really don't eat in the restaurants that much like americans do, because we love to cook at home, but for a nice evening out everything is TRATTORIA  is inexpensive , warm and sooo good!!!! Usually is variety of pasta, meat and cheese.... but NEVER  order ALFREDO, because.... IT DOESN ' T EXIST!!!! Is not real italian, and if you love wine, go outside Roma, in the CASTELLI , about 20 km from Roma, where we have the best wine! And while you are in Rome, check my town called ANZIO , on the ocean about 50 KM from Roma where the best fish is served and we have a museum dedicated to the american's soldiers..... CIAO!!

  8. Hello,

YOu can find wonderful inexpensive restaurants all over Rome, you just have to know where to look.

You want to look for the non-tourist restaurants.  These are the places that the locals go to.  So how do you find these places?  First of all, they will not be ATany of the major attractions but they will be close.  If you are at the Trevi fountain just walk about 2-3 blocks away  and you will start  to find some.  They will be down streets without a lot of tourist traffic.  They will be small, plain looking buildings that don't look like much but once you get inside you will find wonderful food.  This works for any of the sites in Rome.

My favorite restaurant is directly behind the Augustus Mausolium.  It is called 'Gusto.  There is no menu, it is a buffet style restaurant with 20 or so different dishes to choose from.  This is a local favorite and gets very lively at lunch time.  If you pull out your map and find the Augustus Mausolium you will see the Ara Pacis (alter of peace) right next to it.  You want to walk down the street between the two of them in the direction of the Piazza del Popolo. Directly behind the mausoluim is a big metal and glass building on the opposite side of the street.  This is where you will find 'Gusto.  Four of us ate there (all you can eat), had a bottle of wine and 2 carafes of water for 50 euros.  The food is amazing.  Give it a try.  Once you see what I mean by going a little bit away from the action you will easily be able to find more "gems" like 'Gusto.
