Can anyone recommend great places to eat out in Whitby and York? Also any good pubs? ?

Will be spending a weekend in Whitby and York with my husband. Does anyone know of any alternative / rock pubs and anywhere great to eat? We are not fussy about food, though neither of us are big fish lovers and my husband can't touch coriander! Any ideas???

i think i had pretty good battered fish in the pub at the bottom of the stairway up to the convent ruins at whitby. i believe it was called the "Duke of York" or something similar. but it was some years ago so i may be completely off my mark.
