  1. This really depends on where you live. Now is not really the best time to grow vegetables, but in some areas, winter crops like lettuce and carrots are ready to be planted. The Contiguous USA is divided into horticultural zones. Zone 1 would be the coldest (montana) while Zone 10 would be the warmest (florida, SoCal). I live in Zone 8a, which is in Northern California. Zones are assigned depending on how log the growing season is (basically, how long before frost comes). After finding what zone you are in, you can better understand what and when you can plant. The best thing you can grow is Tomatoes - Home grown are 100000 times better than the lifeless, unripe sponges at the store. Herbs are also easy to grow, especially in pots. Summer Squashes, like Zucchini, are infamous for their ability to produce under adverse circumstances. Try to grow things you can't buy in the store, or that are too expensive to buy often. for instance, Celery is one of the most difficult things to grow, but you can buy a whole package of it for a dollar. Go to a local nursery that isn't home Depot or Lowe's. A mom and pop place will only stock plants that are meant for your area, and can give you good advice. I only started gardening last year - you learn the most through experience. Just buy some tomato plants(they're fitnickity to grow from seed), plant some squash seeds (they grow very easily) and do as much research as you can. Heres what i could find -

This year was my first vegetable garden. I went to these websites and Y!Answers nearly everyday for the first month. One thing that can't be stressed enough is, prepare the soil.Plow, till and them till again.  I didn't do this well enough, or early enough and have had to fight with weeds everyday. One other tip that I leaned the hard way, don't plant your tomatoes close to your cabbage, it encourages cabbage worms.  good luck

  3. These sites are very good sources for the beginner vegetable grower. I hope they will help lead you on from beginner to pro! There is nothing more rewarding than watching your garden grow into a culinary delight! Good luck and share you success with us later! Faira

  4. Hi Kay

i just started this year, so i am a total novice

i planted seeds around march and have had a great success

i used newspaper pots i made myself, i am trying to be as green and organic as i can

i have had lettuce, carrotts, radish, onions, spring onions, strawberries, beets etc etc and have just gotten new plants for next year, raspberrys, rhubarb, fig tree, etc

i grew all my own herbs, again from seed

there are a few do's and donts but on the whole its pretty easy

yesterday i bought an awesome book, its called the square foot gardener, by mel bartholemew, ask at the library, i think this would be an ideal book for you, tells you all you need to know, and is an AWESOME way to garden for a beginer

once you get into it you will LOVE it and eating your own produce is so rewarding,

    good luck

i was going to email you but you dont allow =[
