I am still running a Pentium 4(Yes. Its that old). I have upgraded the memory to about 2GBs, but there's still problems.

Note: I run a couple of Big Programs, and several small ones. The problems rise especially when Illustrator, Photoshop, and Firefox together.

  1. any intel  processor will be compatible with your motherboard if it is socket 775. So you can basically upgrade to a 3ghz dual core or even quad core if you'd like. But with a new processor generally i would recommend upgrading the power supply to at least 400 watts.

REMEMBER: INTEL PROCESSORS  THAT ARE SOCKET 775!!!

  2. Before upgrading hardware, make sure that it isn't a software problem slowing your computer down. A windows operating system is usually at its fastest immediately after a reformat reinstall. With RAID0, I can get windows xp prof to boot before the blue bars get to cycle once :). You should ignore that last sentence...

    What kind of pentium 4?

I think you have a socket 478 Pentium 4. You can check with CPU-Z, downloadable from here: http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz_146.z...

If you have a socket 478, the best you can hope to upgrade to is a faster pentium 4, which still means slow in today's standards. It's a fairly cheap upgrade if you can find one of those. Otherwise, you should get an entirely new computer someday...

If you have an older socket, get a new computer.

If you have socket 775, you can upgrade to a variety of processors, depending on whether your motherboard supports it or not... You'll have to provide the model/manufacturer of the motherboard (which cpu-z tells you), if you want us to tell you what processors your motherboard supports. If it's an old computer, probably only pentium 4's again.

Pentium 4's are cheap, and they go up to 3.4 ghz and beyond actually... They're old and not that fast these days.
