  1. A good book on the subject is called 'STEAMING TO BAMBOOLA' by Christopher Buckley.  It is a funny account of his spending some time on a ship.   I think it is out of print, but you should be able to find it used on amazon.  In truth, sailing on a merchant ship is not as interestign as Mr. Buckley's book makes it out to be.  I sailed for years, and it can be very boring at times, with moments of excitement.

  2. Boring.   If stopping at random places that are in the middle of nowhere sounds like your idea of fun then go with it.  I work on the ships that go to those ports.  You don't get to see to much and the time there is short.  If you want to travel around research where you want to go and buy a plane ticket.  You will have a better time.

  3. I have heard that it very relaxing and cheaper than a regular cruise. You get to dine with the ships officers. You don't get the shopping and entertainment of a cruise. The schedules are very flexible so you don't have an exact schedule for ports. They stop at the freight ports rather than the cruise terminals.

Sorry, but I have been on six regular cruises. None on a freighter.

Here are a couple of companies.
