Question:

Can anyone show or explain to me a reason to believe in the existence of a God?

I am currently an atheist, but I am only looking for answers. This is a pretty important one IMO. Please respect me and my beliefs as I respect yours.

Some things that you should know about me before answering:

-I am Atheist Agnostic. (I do not believe in God and think it is currently impossible to prove or disprove him. With what I know now, in my opinion, he does not exist).

-I was raised Roman Catholic.

-I believe in evolution and abiogenesis. They make perfect sense to me.

-I have had no personal experiences indicating the existence of a God, and telling me about your PERSONAL experiences will do little to convince me otherwise.

-I do not think the Bible is divinely inspired or sacred, so please do not use it as support.

-My decision was not sudden or uninformed. I became an atheist gradually after several years of inner reflection, thought, and research.

I see no reason to believe in a God because everything that I have seen only seems to hint otherwise. I figured maybe you guys could help me.

  1. I can give you reasons NOT to worship "it"

  2. GOOD QUESTION...

    ummm im living =]

    jk

    people have seen him

  3. There's is no sound reason whatsoever to believe in God unless you define God as the impersonal and all pervading energy of the universe.

  4. Sounds like your mind is already made up.  Too bad faith is accomplished with your heart.  But I wish you well in the future.

  5. Drop the agnostic part and you're good to go. The gospels are the foundation that define "God". If they are not true, there isn't any premise upon which "God" could exist. Just take the bible apart more.

  6. Only the arbitrary existence of matter and energy, but that doesn't prove God at all. It only proves that we experience matter and energy.

The experience is the only thing that we can prove the existence of without a doubt. It is for that reason that I am an atheist zen buddhist.

  7. oh so when u die u think u gonna become a tree?! well i hope some lumber jack come and cuts u down and prints the bible on ur sorry ***!

  8. First you ask for help and then you deny the only sources of help that will benefit you.

    Wise up!

Your question is nothing more than a rant thinly disguised. Rants are not allwed here.

  9. Personally, I LOVE my church! I am a lutheran. Maybe you should try going to a service once to check out the sermon. At my church, the sermons always have real life experiences that shows people getting closer to God. And sometimes you can feel his presence, like getting goosebumps or something. That's happend to me before! =]

  10. well u and me r just alike =]

i was born catholic but i don't believe in god, so i guess i am currently athiest, but i really don't liek to label myself as that...i have no religion..to what i think..religion is bull....

  11. I don't know. I was raised to believe in god and the bible. I have never known anything else to believe in. Good question!

  12. A Christian will respond by asking: Who else do you think created the universe?!

I think its a bit silly, however to assume something only because you can't come up with anything else.

  13. Does it really matter if you believe or not? You can invent any god you want and worship him or her... it's what people have been doing since the beginning of time. Just look at how many different gods and religions there are even now.

  14. no i cannot force you to bekieve in something you do not

Believing in God is no needing proof

i as a Christian do believe some what in the theory of evolution i mean look at bactiria cells that are becoming resistant to meds. that use to work.........it is your choice to make b/c religion is a belief

  15. the best reason- lack of evidence

  16. Something or someone caused everything to come into existence.  That something or someone is called God, or choose your own term.

  17. No, none, zip, zero!

  18. No offense but there really is no point in trying to convince you of anything since you aren't really looking for any answers.  You seem content with being an atheist and as long as you don't push that way of thinking on others then it's entirely your business.

  19. There are none...

It's all a matter of blind faith, which either you have, or you don't.

But even though some people have it, that does not make their beliefs more valid! Their feeble assumptions are not rooted in reality in any way..

  20. I am agnostic.. I do not know what to believe.

I think it is impossible that ONE man created everything, and humans..

It just seems too much of a fairytale i guess... But, sometimes i try to pray, and what i actually pray for, it really happens.. mostly all the time. So, I really dont know..

  21. God is not supposed to be proved, it's supposed to be believed. I can't show you evidence of god's existence, you just need to believe. Just like how we believe that a passed away loving mother will always be in our heart.

  22. Can anyone show or explain to me a reason to believe in the existence of evolution?

  23. No, no one can give you a reason to be a Christian. That is something you have to work out with God. We can give you reasons why we are Christians, but you are a different person, you have to have your own reasons.

  24. Often times when I prey, things I ask for do happen. Like if I really need them. I dunno, it could be coincedence, but I'd like to belive there is a god and he is listening.

  25. you just described me to a T

hopefully you'll get some good answers

    EDIT

wow, i'm amazed at how insultive these 'christians' are when you're honestly looking for some reasoning

haha, look at "you"s answer, and right below it, "smokeyD's"

    that made me laugh

  26. It sounds like you have your mind made up and no one can convince a close minded person.

  27. That pretty much describes my position and that of most atheists I've come across.  I think it's the idea of putting faith in something without good reason that makes us uncomfortable.  Why that position, which everyone applies to all other aspects of life, makes others so uncomfortable that they feel they should deride you for asking is another question.  Perhaps in the back of their minds, no one is totally comfortable with blind faith even if it's been conditioned into them?

  28. It sounds like the virus of religion has already infected you but your immune system (i.e. your mind) is trying to fight back. This can be a lifelong struggle.

If you succumb to  your disease, you can expect a life of progressively worse and worse mental paralysis followed by dementia and death. However, there's still hope for you. There may not be a cure for it, but there are treatments: Buddhist meditation, pantheism, Dawkins, humanism, or even becoming a doctor

  29. There is no evidence for anything supernatural.

However, in the same vein, as an atheist/agnostic, I *can* tell you that there is more going on beneath the layer or reality we are normally accustomed to than most people are ever aware of.

If you want to call this a "spiritual" qualia to nature, I wouldn't have a problem with that.  That's what I would probably call it.

  30. The only time I ever feel like something greater is outer there is when I can't comprehend the beginning of time or how science could cause this universe to come into being.

But I don't think of a deity in the same terms as most religions do.

Most religions require "blind faith," and that is a manipulative and dangerous concept.

  31. Wow, look at all these stupid answers that totally miss the point of your question.  All definitions or concepts of deity are false because a god is not a thing of form and substance and thus it is true to say, does not "exist"  however matter and energy do exist and as Einstein said matter can neither be created or destroyed, it is merely rearranged.  That is to say all things are eternal but changeable.  The gods can be found in the sphere of non-form, non-bieng, the emptiness of pure potentiality and endless possibility of unfolding form.

    So,

    1. Creation continually unfolds and is without beginning or end.

    2. form is impermanent, non-form is eternal

    3. a god can be reasoned  but not proven because we live and think by forms, time and concepts of substance and energy.

    4. The gods are the underlining intelligence, creativity and forces that give motion to the living dynamic interconnected universe we live in.  Science can explain all that exists, the mystic strives to understand the sacred space that contains it all.

Hope that gives you something to ponder and consider.
