  1. Get yourself a Red Map.... it's tops.

  2. If you want a compact map that is discreet, you might like the popout map by Rand McNally.   Have a look at ISBN 1898277397.    Fits in your back pocket.

I used it in Rome.  It doesn't have 100% everything because the map is small and the city is big, but you can sneak off by a building and glance at it without drawing a lot of attention as a tourist.   (Good to avoid people offering you advice and demanding money, or trying outright to steal from you.)

I think I liked their Florence one better.   Their New York City map is the best of that series that I've ever used.

Beyond that, you can frequently get great maps within whatever city and most of the time you can get them free.   Even a map with sponsors on it is a pretty good map in my experience.

Furthermore, the maps that detach from Frommer's books are often pretty good.

  3. The best brand map/guide are from (TCI) Touring Club Italia, DeAgostini.

  4. You can get a pretty good illustrated tourist map at the airport and at any tourist stand located in various posts near main attractions.  The map is distributed for free (but has a lot of advertisements)
