I think it is quite busy guest house but the contens was alright for me.

Be aware that In Japan, if it says Yen15,000 to stay one night , it is usually per person not per room.

  2. Whenever I go to Kyoto I stay at Matsubaya Ryokan. All the cabbies at kyoto station know it, and its literally less than 5 min fast walk to kyoto station, and accross the road from the most peaceful temple Higashi Honganji. Its really great, its been owned by the same family for hundreds of years.

  3. I have stayed a few times at Kyoto White Hotel and really recommend it.

It is a short walk from the railway station, staff are friendly, nice Japanese breakfast and worth the money.

You will sleep Japanese style on futon.

  4. Hotel Monterey Kyoto is a great place to stay for the price. Here are some other ones people like:

    Good luck!

  6. I always stay at Yahara Ryokan in Kyoto.

    I think its 8,000 yen for 2.

there is a 11pm curfew, the rooms have no facilities beyond a kettle and 1960's TV, there is a shared bathroom with fixed times for having a shower, the walls are quite thin, it's hard to find, there's no breakfast.

But it's ran by a mother/son who are OK with english and it's as "real Japan" as you could want.

i.e. shared bath water with other guests, sleep on futons on tatami, siding paper doors, not been redecorated for 30 years (seemingly).  Don't worry.. it's really clean.
