  4. I am sure there are many websites for 1st and 2nd grade history, but why not just use real books? Most kids at this age will nto retain the information anyway, so why not read them small (grade level) biographies and stories set in these time periods? You can find the American Girls story books, story books about Jamestown, the Pilgrims, the presidents, etc. I would think these would be more interesting for a small child. We read a lot of books, both fiction and non-fiction that were historical in nature and the kids loved this. Some movies are also appropriate in introducing another time period and culture.

I can tell you from experience that your child will nto retain much of what you teach them at this age about history. Most kids who are 6-8 years old have no concept of real age (as in historical age), see no relevance in the information, and retain little, if any of what you teach. I know as I tried this with my own kids several years ago (I have been homeschooling the past 15 years).

When I saw that the older kids didn't retain the information I waited until the younger kids were older (around 9-10) and then we went over all the information again, and some of it they still never retained....

However, what I did do was take them to them to museums (they loved this!!!!), to the local Indian Mounds (Adena/Hopewell cultures) and the accompanying museum, and other real places where they could see, touch, observe, and make the history come alive. This helped much better with retainment.

It doesn't hurt to introduce kids to history, but when their brains are not cognitively ready to digest the information and understand the reality and relevance of the information, you are wasting your time and theirs.
