I really enjoyed Pier 39 when I went --- tons of awesome shops, aquariums... there's also Fisherman's Wharf, ChinaTown.. And Alcatraz is a MUST!

The Exploratorium (http://www.exploratorium.edu/) is a great hands-on museum - a perfect place to bring the kids.

Golden Gate Park - Bike riding, roller skating, Japanese Tea Garden, Paddle Boats, Deyoung Museum and the new Acadamy of Science due to open in the Fall

Yerba Buena Gardens - Zuem, Carosel, ice skating, bowling, and the Metreon

cable car to Fisherman's wharf.  Wax Museum, submarine and other ships to tour.  Pier 39, Ghiradelli Square for restaurants AND ice cream sundae at the chocolate Factory.

Japanese tea garden in Golden Gate Park.  Museum  of Modern Art, Asian Art Museum, De Young Museum (by Japanese Tea Garden)..If the kids are under 21, go Sunday Matinee to Beach Blanket Babylon in North Beach.  North Beach Restaurant  for dinner.  China Town nearby.  Coit Tower if you're driving or cab.  Check out S.F. Mint if avail. for tour.  There's plenty more to see and do depending how long you'll be in the city.
