Can anyone suggest ideas for how a 10 year old can volunteer in the community?

My child (5th grader) wants to get involved in volunteer work, preferably with animals but not limited too that. I don't know where to look. Because of her age, she may be too young for some places but I'd appreciate any ideas out there.

  1. Girl Scouts is a great way to provide your child with opportunities for safe community service activities.

Because of your child's age, most organizations are going to require you to volunteer with her. IdeaList provides a nice list of resources regarding family volunteering:

  2. have her get involved with different programs like 4-H or church youth groups. i do lots of community service projects through that. i also do Habitat for Humanity but she may be to young for that check with your local chapter. and if she is intrested in animals, im pretty sure that animal shelters could always use some extra help. just call them up and ask. you could also ask your vet... hope that helps

  3. read to the senior citizens, visit senior homes she will gain wisdom and look forward to old age!

  4. Animal shelters are a good suggestion, dog walking etc, she would have to have an adult with her though as many animal shelters offer offenders a place to do their 'community service'.

What about reading stories at the library?

  5. Check your local humane society they always need dog walkers.

Also check your library, esp in the summer--most let pre-teens and teens volunteer there.

  6. Maybe see if she can help out for an hr. or two at the animal shelter, or work your local library this summer. Some of the kids in our community have done this. Also, ask if you have a museum or zoo close to your house if they need a vollunteer to help.
