Can anyone suggest some good guitar finger exercises please. Best answer gets 5 stars.?

Hey i have 2 guitars and have had them both for about 6 months now. I have a fender strat and an old Westfield acoustic.

I haven't been taking playing too seriously since i got them because i have had a lot of exams to study for but now they are over i really want to star playing more etc.

I am a beginner but can play quite a lot. I can play simple stuff like the intro to Sweet child o mine by GNR. I know loads of chords etc.

Just need any hints and tips of improving. I have stayed at the same level for 6 months. I need tips to get my fingers moving a bit faster etc... maybe tell me a few exercises i can do... and also please tell me how long each day i should practice Thanks!

  1. do some hammer ons put one finger on the 7th fret and another on the 10th fret and take the finger that u normally pick with and press down then pull off and with the finger on the 10th fret pick it up and push back on over and over again


  2. Scales for one !!!!!!!! Then I find this one very helpful for my students;.....place your fingers for playing in the first position, the fingers being perpendicular to the fingerboard.....use all four fingers....keeping the thumb in the middle of the back of the neck.....start like this: play the first finger in the first fret, then use the second for the second fret, then the third for the third fret, and then the fourth, all on the first string......do this up and down all six strings ......then start again using the second finger first, then third then fourth, then end with the first. Then start again using the third finger the the fourth then the first ending with the second. Continue this until you start with the fourth and go backwards. When you have this down, and get good at it start over again with the same exercise but starting at the second fret.....this is very good for training the muscels and streching !!!!!!! Don't over do this in the beginning as you may cause an injury, I know.... this is what I did over thirty five years ago and had many a vist to the hand Dr. Make sure that your fingers are held correctly ....and that the tips of your fingers are making the note not the flat of the fingers !!!!!!!

  3. practice message in a bottle by the police it will help a lot to strech ur fingers..also the zhepyr song by red hot chilli pepers...will help...search for them on youtube

  4. go to lessons. they will teach you finger excersises. it takes time.

  5. curl your fingers for a while, i do this sometimes and it helps me a lit

  6. You don't really need to practice more than 30 min a day at first. A good finger exercise would be learn some scales like Pentatonic and phrygian and run up and down as fast as you can over and over then try and do them with just hammer ons and pull offs.

  8. you can do the 1,2,3,4 excersise which u basically start off on the first fret 6th string then go down to the first string and do this along the neck, you can also do 1,3,2,4 or 1,4,2,3. i suggest to start slow then build up on speed heres a tab for 1234
