I just got my wisdom teeth taken out 2 mornings ago. They have given me strong medication that has terrible side effects and I am in so much pain right now. My neck muscles are so hypersensitive that my skin feels sunburnt. And I'm afraid of having a dry socket, and won't be seen until later today. Some one PLEASE describe what you had to go through so I can at least understand this pain a little more?

  1. Oh God. I had my wisdom teeth taken out 2 years ago. I felt HORRIBLE. They gave me hydrocodone && it made me so nauseous that I stopped taking it after the second time. I had no way to control the pain so I felt like absolute c**p. I had no appetite && had headaches && felt nauseous alot because the blood irritated my stomache. I basically slept for a week srtraight. I ate nothing that week && lost 20 lbs in 5 days. I barely drank  && was dehydrated which only made my headaches worse. Eventually it got better though && the swelling went away so I didnt look like a chipmunk anymore lol I still had a really hard time eating though because sucking through a straw could cause a dry socket because it could suck something out or whatever the doctor said && then I couldnt chew because the places where they stitched my cheeks was all swollen. && then when I could chew again my doctor gave me this cool syringe thing I filled with water && used to squirt the food out of the holes in the back of my mouth, which was both cool && realy gross at the same time lol But it will all get better with time. It took about 2 weeks for everything to go back to feeling normal again for me =]

  2. Oh Yeah I feel for you..It is horrible!! The only thing that worked for me was vicodin..I dont know what they have you on but It is the worst pain ever!!! I even would take nyquil just to fall asleep so I didnt have to feel the pain..The doc is just going to give you something different for pain. I am sorry you have to be in this much pain after only 2 stupid teeth. Good Luck Hope u feel better!!

  3. i can sympathise...i didnt have the same effects but it was pretty bad because me and my brother had our wisdoms taken out in hospital at the same time and he was fine and eating hot dogs 2 days later while i was dying and in so much pain. I finshed all the pills they gave me and then i started with nurofen plus and panadol...i had so many of them i lost count....your only supposed to have 8 a day and i think i had like 16 or more in a 12 hour period which can damage your body but i didnt care coz the pain hurt so much, i just tried to spend all my time sleeping. After a few days it stopped hurting really bad though.

I couldnt eat anything for the first two days - just drank. After that i could only eat sloppy stuff like mash potatoes and jelly for a week. And my face looked like a chipmunk. I was in bed for a whole week. But after that i was good. Im sure you'll be fine in about 2 days. Its probably best if you ask for different medicine....and just try and sleep as much for the first couple days. Goodluck hun, but yeah i totally understand.

  4. When I had my wisdom teeth taken out (3 weeks ago), I also had a rough time of it.  I was put on Vicoden (sp?) and ibuprofen which relieved the majority of the pain-- but at the end of each dosage I still felt the severe throbbing and aching.  Icing helped with that, and eating slushies.

I did not have neck muscles and hypersensitive skin so that may just be you reacting to the medication.  My medication simply made me nauseated and drowsy.  After three or so days, if you still feel severe pain-- it's likely that you have a dry socket.

But don't worry-- dry sockets aren't as scary as they seem to be, I had two myself.  When you go back to the doctor, if it turns out that you do have dry sockets, he will pack them with a small medicated numbing strip and you will be relieved of most pain within the hour.  At least, that's how it was with me.  The medicated strips will be replaced every three days or so until the dry sockets begin to heal.
