  1. You can teach yourself...Read this text completely first before you do anything

Before you even start the vehicle, just sit in the driver's seat...MAKE SURE THE PARKING BRAKE IS ON...With your left foot, press down on the clutch all the way to the floor and hold it there...Take the gear shift lever and put it in NEUTRAL...This position is located so that the lever moves freely from side to side...The positions are usually marked on top of the lever or on a decal closeby (check the owner's manual too.)

With the transmission in NEUTRAL, keep the clutch pressed down and start the car...Step on the gas and raise the rpm to 2000 and hold it there for a moment...Listen to what it sounds like...Then go to 2500 rpm and listen to what that sounds like.

    Turn the engine off.

Next, move the lever all the way to the left (close to you) and forward til it slides into place - this should be 1st gear...Bring the lever back to NEUTRAL and then straight back to 2nd...Move the lever to NEUTRAL then over and forward to 3rd - just follow the pattern for the gears on top of the lever...If the lever does not move easily from one gear to the next, let the clutch out then press it back down (this is called double clutching)...Remember, the only time you depress the clutch pedal is when you shift gears...And when you step on the clutch, your right foot comes off the gas pedal...The tricky part is when you let the clutch out and step on the gas...Do this slowly and simultaneously.

Be smooth...As you become familiar with the gear shift pattern, you'll need to know when to shift the gears...Generally speaking, start in 1st gear to about 10 mph (or 2500 rpm), clutch in, gas out - shift to 2nd - clutch out, gas in to 20-25 mph (or 2500 rpm), clutch in, gas out - shift to 3rd - clutch out, gas in to 35 to 40 mph (again about 2500 rpm)...Refer to the owner's manual for the recommended speed/rpm range.

Slowing and stopping - this essentially is the reverse of accelerating...As you slow down to the speed ranges shown above, you want to be in the referenced gear for 2 reasons; 1. the lower gear helps you slow down and 2. you are in the proper gear if you have to accelerate again - like in slow and go traffic....Do not hold the clutch in while slowing/stopping until you are in 2nd and dropping down past 10 mph.

Terrain - you have a lot of hills to contend with in TN...It can be very dicey coming off the brake, letting the clutch out and stepping on the gas - all at the same time, especially with another vehicle behind you...I do not recommend that you try your hand in this setting until you are absolutely sure of your abilities and your knowledge of the operating characteristics of your vehicle.

Remember - take your time, know the gear positions without looking at the lever, know how to start the vehicle quickly because there will be times when you will stall (kill) the engine; practice and practice on an empty parking lot just going from 1st to 2nd until you can do it without conscious demand...Hopefully after an hour or two of going through the basic motions behind the wall, you'll be comfortable enough to join the fender benders and the bumper jumpers.

    All the best.
