Can anyone tell me, straightforward and simply, what caused the russian-georgian confict that's going on now?

Effectively it is / was a land grab exercise by the Georgian government.

The region is being destabilised by the US deploying 'military advisers' in Georgia under the guise of training the Georgian army.

The Russians quite rightly, have taken exception to this posturing, however as always, it is the innocent that suffer.
