Can anyone tell me a bit about Wanganui (NZ)? i.e. job prospects, suburbs etc?

I'm looking to move to the North Island next year to a warmer region (i.e. no snow!) so I'd love to hear from anyone who is either living in Wanganui or who has lived there. Thanks.

  1. I'm not too sure. It seemed like quite a nice little town when I drove through it but there are gangs in Wanganui which occasionally have shoot outs.

    Good luck with moving :)

P.S I would try Palmerston North.

  2. Try Palmerston North or even New Plymouth, NP is a great little town, right on the beach, lovely parks...

Wanganui has the name " Gang Capital", most of my family live in Wangas, & there isnt  alot to do there, i wouldn't want to bring kids up there. My parents love it, but they are retired. It's a nice town, but im sure you can do better.

  3. Until further foreign investment hits Wanganui - I would warn against it at the moment. Michael Laws is mayor and that is not a good thing. The makeup wearing, lycra clad anti-immigrationist abhors foreigners especially those of the polynesian/asiatic/european kind. If you wanted a town with foward thinkers and fair justice - again Wanganui is not the town for you - Apart from the local Chinese and a few other personalities - Wanganui suffers from an inferiority complex. The good ole whiteboys (however g*y they appear - Mr Laws) still have Wanganui tight in their greedy little warped clutches - youd be far better off in Hawera or Haumoana - they are less likely to c**p on you. For employment - most people end up at Lucky Pet Food or Richmonds (meatworks), there are other jobs but these are the mainstay. Wanganui is a farming region so if you are well versed in that area - you will find employment. The scenery is absolutely beautiful - however some of the "hotspots" are unworkable (i.e Lake Virginia - Polluted , Wanganui river - Polluted by illegal water diversion schemes implemented by corporate entities, DOC funded 1080 drops and raw sewage overflow). If you have allergies - they will only get worse {city council encourages use of Privet as a widespread decorative} and the local doctors will blame you for "inadequate health care" due to lack of any real medical experience. As for the suburbs - I have lived in Wanganui East which is a good middle/working class area, St Johns - Upper middle class, Springvale - middle class, Gonville - varies, Castlecliff - varies. Out of all these places I would choose Castlecliff - I have a house at the moment in St Johns however I am looking to change location. The people there are absolutely fantastic. They are down to earth, approachable and realistic while still possessing aspirations - you will not find that in St Johns (the affluent area where I live). You may hear a foul word or twelve while there but that is nothing compared to the comaraderie that you will experience. The closer to the beach you are - the better. There are old and young alike residing in the "Cliff" and I guarantee that once you become an active community member there - you will not want to move anywhere else. I plan to relocate as soon as I can.

  4. Join the Black Power or Mongrel Mob. That's basically all there is there.
