  1. If you want to stay in a safe, non-touristy spot I suggest the Hotel Augustus.

  2. we stayed in hotel porte maggiore. €80 a night for a double room and it was fairly clean and with internet access and a supermarket around the corner, which i thought was good value. plus the tram stops right outside the door and its only about 600 yards from the vittorio emanuele metro station. we booked through needahotel.com

another time we stayed in the regency up near the via veneto. it was supposed to be a 4 star but hey, for €95 a night for a double room i dont think anyone was expecting it to be. it was clean aswell and they were friendly.  www.travel.it/roma/hotelregency is the website

  3. Read my travel blog about Venice and Rome you will get useful information ..

  4. if it's not a family affair, and it's not a romantic getaway where you need the privacy...

I'd recommend the Yellow Hostel, you'll meet loads of friends who also want to see the city properly, and lots o fun!

I also recommend Rome revealed for the tour of St Peters Basilica and the Vatican Museums (well worth it)

Rome is a great city, amazing place...but not quite so good as Florence :)

  5. hosteling is a great way for young people to see Europe. Have your student ID at the ready for lots of great discounts on transport and Museums, historical sites etc. Hers what no one is saying, Southern Ital and Northern Italy are two different countries! North is very clean , cultured and safe. The south is NOT. do not let your money or ID out of your site, not even when you sleep and I am not exaggerating. Crime from Rome to Naples is so outrages its not even reported any more When you see something like a robbery or a mugging turn around the police are probably in on it. I can't begin to tell you , you have to see to believe. Stay with your tour group, ride the tour buses, stay in a group. Oh yeah, be careful when walking around of the traffic . Italians in the south view traffic lights and stop signs as Mear suggestions they rarely take.

  6. I stayed at Colors, a hostel in Rome. It's really one of the nicest hostels I've stayed in. You can get single rooms or rooms for mixed-gender or family groups. If you're okay with hostelling, this would be a great place to stay.
