I hope to be travelling there and staying and the Cronulla Beach Youth Hostel, I'd like someone to tell me what the area is like.

What facilities are there? Shops, Internet Cafés , Cinema, Entertainment ?

I think there is a train station there, and I have read a wikipedia site, but i'd like a personal account of the area from someone!

Thanks in advance!

  1. Cronulla is a beach community, has a train station with direct services to Sydney CBD and Bondi. It is close to Hurstville, which is a skyscaping commercial district with all the things that you mentioned.

Dont worry about the Cronulla Riots, they were 2 years ago and it has settled down now. There are still Lebanese gangs at night, so watch out.

  2. Cronulla is a nice place.

That first post is referring to something that happened awhile ago and i doubt will happen again. These 'gangs' they are talking about are harmless teenages.

There is some nice national park if you like nature or walk to talk a hike/see some aussie scenery.  There are lots of parks around too.

As far as shops/movies I would go to miranda shopping centre. :/

yes theres a train but i have never been on that.

I have taken a ferry from cronulla a couple of times though.

  3. Cronulla is fine. Im not sure what the other person is talking about, because they've obviously never been there in their life. It's a predominantly white, middle class suburb.

There was violence there last year, when stupid minority groups and white trash bogans had a big fight, but those problems have been sorted out now, and arent anything to worry about. They havent been anything to worry about for a very long time.

The main facilities are on the streets directly fronting the beach. You can find internet cafes, cafes, supermarkets and bars along this strip. The railway station is also right on the beach in this area as well.

Im not sure if there are many hostels in the area though, because it is a fairly up market sort of place. Some of the pubs probably have cheap accomodation as well.

The main problem with staying in Cronulla is that it's a long way away from everything. It's located right down on the southern fringes of Sydney, which means that it is quite a long train ride to the city for sightseeing and the like. This can get pretty expensive if you make a few trips to and from the city.

If you wanted to stay beachside, but wanted to be closer, Id recomend staying in Coogee.

  4. hahaha good luck with that. Cronulla isn't the nicest place, so seriously, be really careful. there are a lot of immigrants and gangs i believe. a few years ago, there were serious riots that broke out there. the shire really isnt the best place to stay in sydney - if you can, i would try and get a hostel by the northern beaches.
