Can anyone tell me about good restaurants in Montreal?

The one I always go to with somebody from out of town is Swartz, located on St-Denis street. They offer the best smoked meat I've ever had... it is very small though, but it has the feel of a 1930's deli! Really cool place.

What kind of food do you like - Indian, Chinese, Western European (French, Italian, Greek, German, etc.), Middle Eastern (Lebanese), Polish, North African (Algerian, Moroccan, etc.), Ethiopian too, why not?

The list of good ethnic restaurants in Montreal is endless!

Take your pick - I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

For smoked meat, I love Reuben's.  I go every time I visit, at least once.

For classic French cuisine, I recommend Bonaparte, in Old Montreal.

For sushi, I highly recommend Sho Dan, the one on the corner of Stanley and De Maisonneuve.

For steak, I recommend Queue de Cheval.  Highly expensive though.

For a good, inexpensive, no-nonsense steak, Steak Frites in Old Montreal, on Rue St-Paul.

For really good, reasonably-priced Chinese, I go to a place in Chinatown called Ruby Rouge.

For good overall continental cuisine (steak, seafood, etc.), I enjoy Restaurant du Vieux Port, in Old Montreal.

For great, inexpensive Italian, go to Cafe Presto.  They take cash only though.  The food is excellent!
