Can anyone tell me about poppers that are used to fish for trout, explaining exactly how you use them to fish?

do you use a floating line or a sinking line etc? And does anyone have an opinion about the usefulness of poppers in catching trout?

  1. poppers creat a feeding noise in the water which attract the trout. i use sinking line. when you use a popper jerk your line every 20 to 30 seconds. hope this helps

Personally i don't like them, to me there is fly fishing and then there is using a big lure on a fly rod, i have to say that poppers fall into the later category, poppers should be fished on a  floating line for trout on at least a 7/8wt rod as anything lighter and you risk snapping the tip due to air resistance of a huge popper. Ive tried them a few times and have had allot more fish on dry flies than poppers, plus the feeling of watching a trout take a dry fly is way better than using poppers.

  4. Use floating line! They are designed to stay on top of the water. They are also more of a bass fly than for trout.
