Can anyone tell me about selling insurance as a career?

A friend of the family sales insurance through State Farm. He has offered to mentor me and show me the ropes in the insurance business. I know absalutly nothing about insuarance. Is ita good career? Is it difficult to do? How much money do you make? Im in California. thanks

  1. i work for state farm and if you really get into it, there is definitely money involved. after you build your clientele you have people working for you, and you don't have to do anything.


  2. Its a good career if you already have outstanding customer service skills, organizational skills, and can stand customers, and a mentor-boss making demands on you throughout the day.

    Pay depends on whether the owner wants to give you a salary plus commission or simply just a salary and a bonus once in a while.

    The best bet is salary plus commission because for every lead you make into a sale, you get a portion of his commission.  Make sure you like the owner, otherwise, there is a personality difference and it won't be worthwhile working for him/her.  Make sure  you like your product, too.  Or, again, its not worthwhile selling.

    I knew nothing when I started, and I had to leave the first employer who was going to get me my own sattellite office as well.  He was a typical salesman and I could see it coming.  I prefer the owner who is out to take care of his staff, and this is few and far in between.  Interview the mentor, and get to know the company more.
