In the most simple way of expression, tides are caused by the rotation of the earth and the changing gravitational fields that the water on it experiences by the influence of the moon (and the sun too). The gravitational attraction of the moon pulls the water over to its side and some of it actually flows there, which results in the continous change in the height of the sea.

With the changing tides, marine life was sometimes left stranded above the high-water tide levels on beaches, where it adapted to the different conditions for living out of the water. This was the beginning of the evolution of land animals.
