  1. I know that mustangs are now protected in the US from slaughter. They live on designated ranges owned by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). They live out in the Sierra Nevada desert out by Montana.

They live just as long as any horse: about 18-20 years. Some longer. Because they're the mutts of the horse world, they heights and weights vary tremendously. Horse breeders everywhere have a tendency to hate the mustang because it isn't typically a beautiful horse. However, they are useful because of their incrediably hardy feet and their 'cow sense'. Cow sense is the mustang's innate ability to seemingly 'read' a cow's mind. This was extremely useful for cowboys who used horses to round up their cattle. The mustangs were very good at blocking cattle from escaping their wranglers.

Now wild horses as a general rule shouldn't be approached on foot. These thousand pound animals are attitude on four feet. Some wild horses (ie: Sierra Nevada kind) won't even let you come within smelling distance before they move away. Some of the wild horses (ie: the wild horses on Sable Island in Canada) will let you walk within their herds if they deem you safe enough, but they won't let you touch them without kicking or biting.

    Hope this answers some questions!

    Good luck

  2. As I'm Australian I can't answer the first part.  But as they are very like our Brumby's I can answer the rest.

    *  between 15 and 20 years - baring drought and other disasters

    * they average out to about 14.2hh to 15.1hh and between 250 and 400kg

    * no - if they don't just run off and you manage to get too close to them then you're just as likely to be kicked, bitten or struck at.
