  1. well, it really depends on what part of Peru ur living in and since the currency is  worth less than in the US it is a lot cheaper

  2. the average income is only 3000 american dollars a year, but obviusly things are cheaper than USA. Peruvians can  be paid for a job from 500 soles a month (about 170 american dollars) until 3000 soles (us $1000)  as average a month. If you work in tourism like travel companies you can get more than 1000 soles a month. Cusco downtown is more expensive than other cities, but about the same than Lima in nice areas. Food is cheap in general and clothes; but gasoline is as expensive as in U.S.A.

About tours they become a little expensive if it comes to a private tour, but inexpensive if you share tours with more people due the aforementioned gasoline and therefore the transportation.

To see prices of both private and share tours to machupicchu, tours for families, escorted tours, jungle trips, tour vacations, hollidays in Peru and so on go to:

  3. There is so much to say about Peru that I really wouldn't know where to begin. The cost of living is a lot cheaper than that of the US (especially food), but it really may depend on what part of Peru he is from. I would venture to say that there is a lot of poverty in Peru, but there is also a fair-sized middle class that gets by on the necessities and a few luxuries. Technology is ever on the rise, and many middle-class families are beginning to have at least one computer in the household (along with telephones and televisions). People tend to live with what they need and do not have an excess of material possessions.

You may find better information on wages by asking a Peruvian, but this is the information I found on one website:

"The upper stratum have incomes of between US$2,200 to $4,700 monthly, the low and the very low levels earn only US$270 and $123 monthly (Henríquez 1995)."

I know that this data is 13 years old, but the numbers haven't changed dramatically and it will give you an idea of how things work.

You should try to read about Peru on Wikipedia. They provide tons of information that could come in handy:

I hope he has a nice stay and that you are able to learn a lot about him. :) Good luck!
