Can anyone tell me anything about this weird insect?

Question

killed a bug that is solid black with yellow stripes on its back. It was about 3/4" long and had two things on it's rear that may have been pincers or stings. The insect was killed in east Texas. If anyone could tell me more about it, I would greatly appreciate it. Please provide links if you can.

was it an earwig?

We used to call them Potato Bugs in California. They look worse than they are.
