Can anyone tell me factually, What are the odds of reaching a tie in the game Othello?

My best friend and I one evening played a game of othello, and we tied at the end. It was wierd. Upto that piont Ididnt even think it was possible.

  1. Well I do not believe there is a set answer.

    If you get two identically matched players there there is a high chance of them getting a draw.

    If 64 pieces are played and the play is even then it could be 32 each.

    Where one player is much better than the other then it is not likely to be a draw at all.

    I would estimate where the players are fairly even then it is about 20-1 allowing for the fact that there may be an odd number played in which case it could not be a draw.

    That is 8^2 x 2 x 64!

    That is 64 x 2 x 64!

    That is 64^2 x 2 x 63!

    That is 4092 x 2 x 63!

    That is 8184 x 63!

    etc etc etc until....

    The number of places left on the board that could cause a tie barring all other outcomes = 1/64

    So 1 in 64
