Can anyone tell me how I can add a fringe to a scarf using a crochet needle, a large eye needle, of by hand?

I tried by using a crochet needle to make one according to a display in a book. So far I am doing it totally doing it wrong. Can some one please tell me step by step how to add one. I have not idea how to add it to the end and making a knot. Please somebody help me. Thank you in advance.

Adding fringe with a crochet hook or a latch hook is easiest.  You wrap  your yarn around a form (think paperback book or piece of cardboard here) and cut it open along one edge.  Keep the strands folded in half. Slide your crochet hook (this should be the same millimeter size as your knitting needle or one or two sizes smaller) through the stitch where you want to place fringing at the edge.  Pick each strand, or group of strands, depending on how thick you want the fringe to be, up with the hook at the fold and pull that through the stitch, then pick up the the doubled strand under the finished edge of the knitting and pull the tails through the fold.   By pulling the ends through the fold you create what is known as a lark's head knot.

    A tapestry needle would need to have each fold put through the eye of the needle, sew it through the stitch, take the needle off, then open the fold up large enough to push the tails through it.  I don't recommend this method, or trying by hand, it's hard to push the loop through the knitting with your fingers.
