  1. there isn't much to do because it's basically a self sufficient tourist division.

    but it's ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.

once you get there, you wont want to do much more than relax.

  2. Dominican Republic has some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever played on. The sand is so soft and the water is unbelievably clear and warm. Most of the accommodations are in resort stays. There, you never really have to leave. You can sail, scuba, parasail, kayak, snorkel, learn Spanish, drink and dance till all hours. Pretty much anything you want to do.

The airport in Dominican Republic is also fun. It looks like a giant hut. It has the straw roof and open walls. Customs to leave takes a long time though. They don't have the scanning equipment to check luggage so they pretty much go through every suitcase piece by piece. But, it is one of the best islands to visit. It's paradise.

  3. Punta Cana is not a city.  The focus is more on resorts.  If you are looking to relax, a resort style or cruise vacation is best for you.  If you would like to know about the culture and get a feel for a place, the resort is not ideal.  You would be better off going to a regular hotel in-town, walk around and talk with the locals.  On the other hand, the resorts of Punta Cana are very beautiful.  Playa Dorada Resort in Puerto Plata I would say is a better alternative.  Most resorts are all-inclusive.  You have food, massage/spa, beach, volleyball, games, disco, casino etc...  What you should do are the outdoor activities/excursions.  The following for Punta Cana:

    Dominican Republic Monster Truck Safari

    Marinarium Shark and Ray Experience

    Country Adventure Safari

    Manati Park

    Deep Sea Fishing

    Saona Island Catamaran Cruise

    Scubadoo Excursion

Snorkel Excursion to The Island Catalina

    Santo Domingo City Tour

I lived in DR for many years.  Now I live on the other side of the island, Haiti.  Its an adventure living in a place like Haiti.  You are able to witness democracy come alive and the country progressing slowly.  Taiwan used to be like Haiti 50 years ago.  Now it is on another level.  If you are curious about Haiti.

  4. It depends on how and who you are... there are a lot of tourists in Punta Cana, so you can not only meet some friendly locals, but some fun-seeking tourists as well. There is a lot of music, dancing, and beautiful people that are quite helpful. I'm Dominican, so I'm obviously bias, but I think you'll enjoy it there quite a bit. (Plus things are pretty inexpensive.)

  5. PUNTA CANA-  Second major tourist destination with lots of fun activities like excursions, unfortunately the resorts are far from any major city so it will be difficult for you to know the culture. This part of the island has not been developed to its fullest, however these places will be nice to look at:

Basicila de Higuey – This is a very nice Architecture building that holds our Lady Mary which we call “Virgen de la Altagracia”. Google the name and you will see pictures of it.

La Romana- very nice town well know for “Altos de Chavon” which is a cultural spot where will find art schools, concerts arena, etc. This link will show you more or less what it is, this is about 1 hour away from Punta Cana

  6. dont ever go there. my family went there & we all got sicker that dogs

  7. As long as you don't go to one of those all-inclusive places, there will be plenty to do.  All-inclusives are for cheap boring people.

  8. the dominican republic is the best place to go on a vacation,. if you want to have some good time i recomend you to go to barahona or casa de campo.

  9. Yes this is right, Punta Cana/Bavaro is a large hotel strip with a decend nice beach, but once you are outside, the things to do are much more limited than in Puerto Plata (the best). But this depending on your choice, because some people (most from the USA) dont like to go and discover new things, culture, people, etc.,... Ok you can go to the beautiful island of Saona (natural park) and do some sailing nearby and go to a Safari, but that's it. This is the info from a professional tour operator. Happy to help you.
